BRIDGES can be used like REPEATERS to connect network segments, but they can also reduce network traffic by controlling which packets get forwarded to other segments. Bridges can join dissimilar physical media such as twisted pair and coaxial. They can also join dissimilar architecture such as Ethernet and Token Ring. However, Bridges cannot translate protocols or take advantage of multiple paths simultaneously. |
